In Australia, Is It Called An Apartment Or A Flat?
I’ve been looking at Australian real estate ads online, and I assumed that an apartment was the same thing that we have here — an apartment. But the Aussie apartments I’ve seen advertised sounded more like vacation rentals instead of permanent living spaces.
Anyway, just wondered if there is a difference.

Flats/units is an older term relating to older style buildings.
Apartments are newer modern type buildings

An appartment has more than one rooms. A flat is usually a one-room “appartment” with a separate kitchen. A unit is a one-room place with no separate kitchen, it’s all in one room.
I think what you are finding is Holiday Appartments, that’s a different thing altogehter. Normally appartments can be permanent living spaces, but if you do a search on appartments, i think holiday appartments will come up there as well, just because of the keyword. They are “appartments” in holiday resorts but they may only have one room.
Flats are usually rental dwellings attached to houses or older buildings that contain separate dwellings but usually at the budget end of the market.
Apartments in Australia are called units or home units…they can contain 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms & are multi storey blocks..
Town houses are linked dwellings each of 2 storey with bedrooms up & living space downstairs…
Villas are linked dwellings also , similar to Town Houses except that they are not 2 storey…
Bloody hell, you’re getting some stupid answers. In Australia a flat USUALLY refers to part of a converted house, you know- someone splits up a real big old house, into smaller self contained areas, or has a ‘granny flat’ out the back of the house or under it. An apartment on the other hand has been specifically made to be self contained, usually in a big multi-story building. You may also come across the term ‘unit’, this is usually referring to the same kinda thing as the apartment, but they’re usually in smaller groups (6-8)and normally only on two or three flights, (floors). People play fast and loose with RE terms in Australia, it never hurts to double check!
If you are looking for an apartment try searching for “unit”. This is another term widely used.
Apartment or unit are the more common terms used for this type of accomodation. Not many people use the term “flat”. Its a bit boganish.
Yes, a lot of accomodation is referred to as an apartment. It is an alternate to a hotel.
Yeah an apartmant is the same thing as a ‘flat’ we also call them ‘units’. When looking at Australian real estate you will see apartments and units advertised which are the same thing. A vacation rental will be listed under ‘holiday house’ it will be clearly defined.
Also if you see ’studio apartment’ that is a very small unit for like one or two people.
1 or more bedroom apartments are called flats or units. One room self contained apartments can be called Bedsitters or Studio Apartments.
flat is the same thing, no difference they just call it a flat
i think generally when we say flat it’s a commission flat, so the high rise government run ones
apartments are more up market high rise buildings
