With Canadian citizenship, you don’t know if it’s a couple of years. I have heard of people getting called for test within 8 months and up to 2 years and 4 months. The average is supposed to be 12-15 months.
In my experience, when they sent me a letter to appear for the test, I had 2 weeks notice. Based on that, I think it would be safer for him to limit his vacation to a week or 10 days at the most or if he takes a longer vacation, have a ticket that can be changed and have somebody pick up your mail so if he gets called for the test, be ready to fly back sooner.
You can re-schedule the test but it’s a pain in the neck and means they will give you a date whenever, it can delay you by a year easily. The oath ceremony is 2-4 months after the test, same thing, get a letter in the mail and get called with about 2 weeks notice. Same thing with re-scheduling, better not to do it since it’s a major hassle.
They seem to feel that Canadian citizenship is important enough to people that you will schedule your plans around their needs and not the other way around ;)
