If you $5 in your pocket, don’t go to McDonald’s, go to the grocery store. You can get enough to last several meals instead of one burger. Maybe you need to do without and live like a pauper for a while to teach you to make better choices. Don’t expect others to pick up the slack for your bad choices. Anyone can fall on hard times and I don’t want to criticize you for things you couldn’t control but that’s not what you describe. To get the kind of bad credit you describe and your admission of late payments over at least 2 years, you haven’t been taking responsibility for your own support. Bottom line is no one will (or should) trust you when it comes to payment. Maybe you could find someone to let you stay in a room in exchange for some sort of labor or service on your part.

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009Interesting question! Most anti-discrimination laws include “national origin” as a bar to discrimination. This would tend to indicate that the landlord might not be able to refuse for that reason.
Then again, since legal status isn’t included in anti-discrimination laws it may be an entirely acceptable and legal discriminatory factor.
BTW, being “illegal” isn’t a felony, at least not yet. Nor is giving aid and comfort.
Now, if the landlord has his or her rental criteria set properly they may be able to bar illegals on other common grounds and side-step the national origin and legal status issues entirely. Such criteria might include:
Six months with same employer.
Minimum credit score.
Verifiable favorable references.
Minimum verifiable income.
Specific debt-to-income ratios.
As long as the criteria are applied to all prospective tenants the issue of legal status will probably never arise.

It’s about people who go on vacation to some kind of beautiful paradise but it turns out that they are being drugged in their drinks on the way there and the drug makes them think it’s a beautiful place but in reality it’s a dump.
